Six people were shot and killed by a 31-year-old Walmart supervisor two days before Thanksgiving in Chesapeake VA.
Reports reveal that the shooter left a rambling death note on his phone and apologized for what he was about to do. The note paints a picture of someone who is disturbed and not thinking rationally.
The shooter’s co-workers said he had a reputation for being aggressive, hostile, and had anger issues. It is unknown at this time if he was reported to Walmart or if they identified him as a threat.
The shooter purchased the 9 mm handgun just hours before he committed this horrific act. Many have been questioning why there was not a waiting period to purchase a gun.
There is no federal law requiring a waiting period to purchase guns but four states and DC do impose a waiting period on all firearm purchases, calling it a cooling-off period to prevent acts of violence and suicides.
Similar to the recent UVA shooting and many others across the country, there was leakage which may have been cause for HR to intervene if an effective threat assessment process was in place.
Schools, Universities, and Organizations must start taking this process seriously since we constantly see that there are warning signs prior to many mass shootings.
