11/28/2022 – NYU has recently had breaches of security in their University housing dorms.
In one instance Police and University Security conducted an eight hour door to door search for a trespasser who illegally entered a dorm building. They did not find the suspect. It was reported that the suspect may have entered the facility through a loading dock while garbage was being put out. In another incident, a trespasser jumped a turnstile in front of a guard and entered the building.
The most concerning incident occurred when a perpetrator was caught in a student’s doorway staring at her while she slept. Luckily she woke up and he left her room. We all know how bad this could have been.
On April 5, 1986 Jeanne Clery was raped and killed in her dorm room at Lehigh University. The perpetrator gained access to the dorm through a propped-open exterior door. In 1990 the Clery Act Federal Law was passed which required Universities to report crime statistics, alert the campus community of pending dangers, and prepare an annual security report, among other mandates.
There are many electronic and automated perimeter protection systems available and in use but as in these incidents we may find that there was a failure in the human component. We always urge our clients to make sure all doors and windows are secured and if they must open the perimeter a guard should be posted at the door. In this case, while removing the garbage. Lastly, as far as the guards in the dorm are concerned, management must ensure that there is proper supervision and training for them. Bad actors pick up on security guard inattentiveness and exploit it.
I am sure NYU is closely looking at all these incidents and implementing security improvements.
